(NEW YORK) – Residential contractors can now assist homeowners and renters in evaluating the safety and security of their homes with the new BHMA Certified Secure Home™ program.
The first step to a secure home is having a sturdy lock on the front door; the BHMA Certified Secure Home program is the first of its kind to make it easy for insurance industry professionals – as well as homeowners and building professionals – to identify locks and deadbolts that have been rigorously tested and certified to the highest hardware performance standards for residential hardware.
BHMA – the Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association – is the only organization accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to develop and maintain performance standards for residential hardware. Products that feature the BHMA Certified Secure Home label have been tested to these standards and certified in three areas crucial to any homeowner: security, durability and finish performance.
“BHMA has been the industry leader in certifying builders’ hardware for decades, but this is the first program we have designed for homeowners, specifically,” said Ralph Vasami, executive director of BHMA. “The BHMA Certified Secure Home label allows consumers to make quicker and easier decisions when buying new hardware for their home.”
The BHMA Certified Secure Home label uses a basic rating system, in which each individual lock and deadbolt is given a Good (C), Better (B) or Best (A) rating based on how well it performed in these three areas:
- Security – To see how well it can withstand impact from intruders or a blunt force of nature
- Durability – To see how well it can withstand an excessive amount of weight in addition to repeated, long-term usage.
- Finish – To determine its ability to resist softening, bubbling, peeling, discoloring or corroding over time due to exposure to the elements: saltwater, the sun, humidity, precipitation, as well as oil from human hands.
BHMA has developed hardware standards for the commercial building industry for over 50 years. The organization published its first residential hardware standards in 2015.
