One of the largest land owners in U.S. buys massive plot in rural Indio for $8M. His plans for it are unclear.

The family trust of a man thought to be one of the largest property owners in the country has purchased 1,183 acres of undeveloped desert land once slated for a 3,000-home community – not to mention an 18-hole golf course and a hotel – in the rural desert of north Indio. GM Gabrych Family LP last month purchased the property, a master-planned development called Grand Valley, for $8 million on Jan. 25, county property records show. The company’s general partner is Eugene Gabrych, according to state business records. Gabrych is cited in a four-way tie as the 70th-largest landowner in the United States, according to an annual ranking by the magazine The LandReport in 2017.
