SH seeks new, affordable housing

South Haven may be known for its lakefront beaches and historic lighthouse, but affordable homes? Not a chance. With median home prices estimated at $50,000 higher than the rest of Van Buren County, the city seems destined to attract only rich folks. But city officials want to chart a new course by passing new zoning laws to encourage the construction of dwellings more people can afford. Their desire is laid out in a new master plan that addresses the need for affordable housing –  and commercial and economic development, a central venue for large gatherings, improvements in the M-43 corridor, and preservation of natural resources. If approved later this year, the plan will replace the plan approved in 2011.
