There is a crisis in the remodeling industry, the likes of which I have never seen in my more than 35 years in the building industry. For decades, sad stories of disreputable contractors taking advantage of seniors and homeowners have been commonplace. However, something has changed in the last couple of years — now it’s the homeowners taking advantage of contractors. Over the last few years, the number of reputable local contractors that have gone out of business because of homeowners not paying them or creating situations where none exist is staggering. It seems contractors now have to beware of disreputable homeowners. Sadly, it appears the problem is worse in many retirement communities. There has always been the crazy client that every contractor has encountered and regretted starting their job, but this has gone beyond that once in a while event. Maybe it’s the tough economy, too much information on the internet or just an ugliness that has permeated our society, but there are homeowners — especially some seniors — who now do everything they can to take advantage of people working on projects at their home. It’s a reminder that integrity cuts both ways.
